How do you check the oil on a sight glass?
Bikes with a sight glass require that you hold the bike level – either from the saddle or beside the bike – look at the window conveniently located on the bottom of the engine to make sure the oil level is between the two marks on the case.
How do you check the oil on a Yamaha r1?
Shut off the engine, let it rest for a minute, and check the oil level through the oil sight glass on the right side of the crankcase. The oil level should be between the middle and upper part of the window. Top off the oil if necessary.
How do you check the oil on a Yamaha r6?
- Place the motorcycle on its kick stand.
- The upper hole is where the oil filler cap goes.
- Find the circular beveled handle to the lower left of the clutch case cover on the right side of the bike.
- There should be oil all over the dipstick.
- Clean off the dipstick with a clean rag.
- Reinsert and tighten.
How much oil goes in a sight glass?
For many systems the 1 oz. Oil Sight Glass is adequate. The 3 oz. OSG provides additional volume and should be used when the condensation or water spillover is excessive.
How much oil should be in sight glass?
In the middle of the sight glass, you will see a dot. Ideally, you want the oil level to be in the center of the dot. If the oil level is below the dot, your unit needs more oil. If the oil level is above the dot, you have added too much oil.
How much oil does a 2000 R1 take?
The R1 will use just under 4 quarts of oil, so don’t overfill. Wipe up any spills and start up the bike.
Is it bad to have too much oil in your motorcycle?
Overfilling a motorcycle with too much oil may cause oil to be pushed out the breather hose into the air box. The excess oil can be sucked into the intake and combusted or it may clog the air filter. Riding a motorcycle with too little oil can cause very serious engine failure.
Where should the oil level be on the dipstick?
At the base of the dipstick, there are two marks or small holes indicating the high and low levels of engine oil. The oil level should be between these two marks. Both too high and too low are bad for the car.
What color should my motorcycle oil be?
It should be green or yellow, glossy and semi-transparent. However, if the oil is black or dark brown, the oil has been burnt and broken down, which means you need an immediate engine oil change. You should also check for the presence of any thick sludge.

Although the Yamaha YZF-R6 service manual recommends SAE 20W-40 motor oil at ambient temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, I opted for Mobil 1 SAE 15W-50 “Red Cap” full synthetic oil.
